Moroccan Darija evolved through three stages :

The Evolution of Moroccan Darija :

Every word we use and every expression that flows from our tongues has linguistic roots, and Moroccan Darija is no exception. The dialect went through three main stages before becoming what it is today:

  1. The First Stage : This began with the Umayyad conquest of the Berber lands in North Africa. At this time, Arabic was introduced to the region, though it initially had a limited presence. It eventually faded during the Berber revolt, which led to the expulsion of the Umayyads.

  2. The Second Stage : This period spanned the 11th and 12th centuries, when Arab tribes (Banu Hilal, Banu Ma’qil, and Banu Sulaym) entered the region and brought with them the Bedouin dialect of Arabic.

  3. The Third Stage : This saw the migration of Andalusian people to the Maghreb after being expelled from Spain. These Andalusian migrants, along with the Arab tribes, contributed significantly to the spread and development of the Arabic language in Morocco.
